Title: The Method of Regularized Stokeslets
Abstract: Regularization methods are Lagrangian numerical methods for the computation of fluid flows in which a Dirac delta distribution - that represents a point force, for example - is replaced with a smooth approximation. A regularized force field applied to a Stokes flow results in a flow known as a Regularized Stokeslet. The result is a formula that relates the applied forces at points in the fluid to the velocities at the same points. The formula depends on the geometry of the problem. Other solutions can be derived which lead to other regularized elements such as Rotlets, that represent the flow due to an applied torque. I will present the ideas behind the method, some of the known theory and numerical examples from biological applications relevant to a couple of the other talks in the workshop.
