Text: Differential Equations,   by Polking, Boggess and Arnold, second edition

Software: The Student Edition of Matlab, version 7/6/5.3/5.2/earlier

Course Grade

The semester letter grade will be given based on your performance in three tests (50%) and  quizzes (40 %), and 1 project (10%).

Tests and Quizzes

There will be three (3) tests during the semester. Quizzes will be given twice a week (except in test weeks). There will be no make-up quizzes and generally no make-up tests. However, in some extreme cases, if you are forced to miss the test, you must notify me within three (3) days of the date of the test, preferably before the test is given.

The  tentatively dates for tests are

Homework

Homework will not be collected. However, some homework problems, with or without slight modifications, will appear in quizzes and tests. (So will the examples that I work on in my lectures.) Thus it is absolutely imperative to work on each of the problems assigned below, preferably in group discussions.

Matlab

This course makes use of MATLAB®, which is a program for mathematical computation, analysis, visualization, and algorithm
development. Students are required to have their own copy. The Student Version (PC or Linux; not available for Mac) is
reasonably priced (under $100) and can be bought at the Tulane Bookstore or online at
http://www.mathworks.com/products/studentversion/. You will need three auxiliary differential equation files:  http://math.rice.edu/~dfield . (Be sure that the version of the auxiliary files matches your version of MATLAB.) The three files go in the directory  toolbox\local  of  the MATLAB directory on your PC.
