Time & location: All meetings are Mondays in Gibson Hall 414 from 3:00 to 4:15 P.M.
The plan is to go through Eisenbud's book "The geometry of syzygies". The object is to understand the relation between geometry and equations. Algebraically, the theory of syzygies offers a microscope for looking at systems of equations (and corresponding affine and projective varieties), and helps to make their subtle properties visible. The book is concerned with the qualitative geometric theory of syzygies.
