Time & location: All meetings are n Mondays at 3pm in Gibson Hall 400D .
We begin this seminar by reading the paper “The dynamics of a family of one-dimensional maps,” by Susan Bassein. The paper studies a very simple family of interval maps, yet there is a surprising variety of dynamical behaviors. Next we shall investigate dynamical systems on inverse limits of intervals using these maps, looking for topological connections to the dynamics. After that we shall investigate dynamical systems on intervals, then on higher dimensional spaces. We conclude with some holomorphic dynamics, e. g., Julia sets, the Mandelbrot set.
