Tyler Barker

Erin Beyerstedt

I am originally from Wisconsin which is where I did my undergraduate work. I graduated from Carthage College in 2003 with majors in mathematics & biology and minors in religion & business. I spent the following year teaching math at a private high school. From 2004-2006 I attended Western Washington University and earned my master's degree in mathematics. In the fall of 2006 I began work here at Tulane in the PhD program, supported by a VIGRE fellowship. This is now my fourth year and I am working with Victor Moll, focusing on combinatorics. In my spare time I enjoy going to the gym, pottery, exploring the city, dancing, listening to live music, sampling the amazing food found in nola, traveling, and spending time with friends.

Peter Bierhorst

I am originally from New York City.  I graduated from Harvard in 2004 with a degree in Mathematics.  After graduation, I worked in politics for a while, then tutored math for a living, living in New York City and then in Portland, OR.  Eventually it became clear that I missed learning math and hated cold weather, so I moved south and started here at Tulane in Fall 2008.  My mathematical interests include Probability and Topology.  I enjoy a New Orleans staple, the fried shrimp po-boy sandwich, and am a fan of New Orleans style piano.

Will Brian

I grew up in Collierville, TN and went to college at Baylor University in Waco, TX. There I enrolled in an interdisciplinary program (the University Scholars program) through which I studied math, (ancient) greek, philosophy, and physics. I came from there straight to the PhD program at Tulane. Although I came here knowing only that I wanted to study some sort of pure mathematics, I have become most interested in foundational questions, specifically those related to class theory and non-well-founded sets. I have a beautiful wife named Caitlin who is currently teaching at the New Orleans College Preparatory Academy. We divide our spare time among our family, friends, and church, reading, running, swimming, biking, cooking, pipe-smoking and drinking good whisky (those two are maybe just me), and exploring the beautiful city in which we live.

Jason Calmes

I grew up in a small town near Hammond, La, not far from New Orleans. I attended Southeastern Louisiana University, where I received a B.S. Mathematics, a B.S. in Physics, and a B.A. in English. Currently, I am a Ph.D. student at Tulane University where I have received a M.S. in Mathematics and am pursuing a M.S. in Statistics and a Ph.D. in Mathematics. I am studying orbispaces and their homology and cohomology with Dr. Terry Lawson and Dr. Weimin Chen. I am supported by a Board of Regents Fellowship and have been an instructor in both Calculus and Probability & Statistics. In my meager spare time, I maintain my domain (http://www.overmen.net/), play and record music (guitar, bass), read sci-fi, fantasy, and philosophy, and keep up with my favorite TV shows and football (God's favorite sport).

Johnny Feng

I'm originally from Memphis, TN, where I graduated from White Station High School. I did my undergraduate at Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, TN, obtaining a BS in Mathematics with a minor in Computer Science. I'm here at Tulane with a VIGRE Fellowship, working towards a Ph.D. in pure math. I'm looking towards either Topology or Differential Geometry as areas to focus in. Outside of math, I like to study bits of Cognitive Science, Computer Science, and philosophy. In my spare time, I like to read, explore the local hangouts, or just spend time with my friends relaxing. That's it. I wanted my bio to be something a little more indicative of my personality, but the powers above approved the bland version..

Jianjun Huang

Kelley Johnson

Karen Kohl

Originally from Pass Christian, MS, just an hour away the Mississippi Gulf Coast, I spent 14 years in Boston before returning in 2006. I graduated from MIT in 1996 in applied math with a minor in linguistics and then worked in software before returning to MIT for graduate study in computer science. Supported by an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, I specialized in computational linguistics. I received my master's in 1999 and stayed 4+ more years in the PhD program until TAing a math class made me recall that I really wanted to teach math. After teaching 2 years at a community college, I started over with graduate school, close to home here at Tulane with a VIGRE fellowship. Naturally, my interests are still computational and I will choose a research area within applied math or statistics. In my spare time, I enjoy biking and Argentine Tango.

Dmitry Kurochkin

In 2004 Dmitry graduated from Moscow State University, where he earned his B.S. & M.S. in Physics (Magna Cum Laude). Then he came to New Orleans and joined Tulane University as a graduate student.

Michael Levinson

Yu Liu

Sarah Lukens

Orginially from Oakdale, Connecticut, Sarah pursued her undergraduate degree at the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, PA, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BS in Mathematics and Architectural Studies and a minor in Studio Arts. Sarah is a graduate student at Tulane studying computational fluid dynamics. In addition to math her interests are reading, seeing live music and dancing, crawfish, swimming, Tulane waterpolo, being generally arts n crafty in the all around sense, appreciating her schwill friends in Pittsburgh, and enjoying a "fancy" lifestyle in the most college definition of the word.  She also enjoys tubing on the Bogue Chitto river.

Jason Miller

I was born and raised in Hamden, CT. I graduated from Marist College in 2007 with a B.S. in Applied Mathematics with a Chemistry concentration. My mathematical interests are mostly applied, including fluid dynamics and computation. In my spare time I like to play sports (hockey, baseball, golf, and tennis) and music (guitar and drums). I also consider myself somewhat of an outdoorsman as I like to go camping and fly-fishing.

Jeff Pullen

I grew up in Roswell, GA which is a northern suburb of Atlanta. I graduated from Berry College in 2006 with a B.S. in Mathematics before coming to the Ph.D. program at Tulane. My research interests include geometric topology, knot theory, and probability based homology theory. When I'm not doing math, I enjoy playing sports, video games, and hanging out with my friends.

Robert Rachal

I'm a magnanimous, affable cat rollin' over outrageously killer mathematical obstacles down here, where I've always been, in New Orleans.

Edward Selser

I grew up here in the New Orleans, where I've lived all my life.  I attended Loyola University (New Orleans), where I received a B.S. in Physics (with a minor in Mathematics).  After that, I pursued a graduate degree in Physics here at Tulane.  And, after receiving a M.S. in Physics, I switched over to the Mathematics department, where I am currently working towards a Ph. D.  My main area of focus is Applied Math, with a particular interest in PDEs.  In my spare time, I enjoy reading, cooking, and basically all kinds of sports.

Shanshan Shen

Nicholas Sparks

Jeff Steen

Richard Stolz

Armin Straub

While I basically enjoy all kinds of Mathematics, I am currently focusing on a very enjoyable mix of combinatorics, special functions and computer algebra, usually related to the evaluation of integrals (sure enough: my advisor is Victor Moll).  I spent my first year at Tulane in 2006/2007 and then went back to Germany, my home country, for a year to finish a diploma and graduate from TU Darmstadt.  Since 2008 I'm back at Tulane.  In my free time I particularly enjoy eating, working out, playing poker, watching the stock market, experimenting, and playing soccer (though I can't even shoot straight).

Xiangfeng Yang

I am from China, where I got my master degree in mathematics in 2007. Now I am a Ph.D student at Tulane math department. Here I want to learn something about probability theory and stochastic processes, which may lead to my thesis. I like Ping Pang during my spare time.
